Administrative/Biographical History

The Conference of Mennonites in Alberta was formed in 1929 largely by Mennonites who had immigrated to Canada from Russia in the 1870s and 1920s. It was affiliated with the Conference of Mennonites in Canada and with the General Conference Mennonite Church. By 1998 it grew to 21 congregations, including several in urban areas. In 2000, several congregations withdrew from the conference over issues of congregational discipline. In 2003 the conference adopted a new constitution and changed its name to Mennonite Church Alberta. It affiliated with the newly-organized Mennonite Church Canada. It has supported institutions such as Menno Bible Institute, Swift Current Bible Institute, Rosthern Junior College, Camp Valaqua, and Coaldale Home for the Aged. It supports auxiliary organizations such as Alberta Women in Mission and Alberta Mennonite Youth Organization.

Series L. Conference Ministers’ Records. – 1965-2003. – 42 cm of textual records

The Conference of Mennonites in Alberta (later Mennonite Church Alberta), created a new leadership position, variously referred to as the Conference Pastor or the Conference Minister, in 1982.  While somewhat different job descriptions were prepared over the years, the main responsibilities of the conference minister included: 1. ministry to pastors, spouses and their families, 2. Ministry to congregations, 3. relating to Conference personnel, and , 4. relating to church-wide structures.  The Conference Minister set up his/her own office and, for many years, served and was accountable to both the Conference of Mennonites in Alberta and the North West Mennonite Conference.  Until 1986 this was a part-time position that was, for several years, combined with the office of Conference Youth Minister.  The two positions were separated in 1986.  David Braun, who had served in both positions, served as Conference Minister until his death in 1993.  He was succeeded, briefly, by Jake Froese, and then, in 1997, by Ray Landis  who served until 2002 when the North West Mennonite Conference withdrew from the arrangement.  Jim Shantz was appointed in 2002 and was succeeded by Dan Graber in 2012.

Records and files of the Conference Ministers were received in four separate accessions:  Accession 2014.010, Accession 2016.005, Accession 2016.024, and Accession 2016.034.
