30 April 1802 Census for Neuenburg

Extracted by Tim Janzen

This site makes available a census taken on April 30, 1802 of the village of Neuenburg in the Chortitza Colony in South Russia. The census was compiled under the direction of Johan Martens who was mayor of the village at that time. The census lists the names and ages of 127 residents of Neuenburg as well as statistical data concerning their possessions. The original document was written in German and may be found on frames 181 to 191 of File #98 of the microfilm of selected files from Odessa Archives, Fund 6, Inventory 1.

This census appears to have been part of a series of censuses that were taken at the same time for all of the villages of the Chortitza Colony. However, the only other village for which we currently have data from this 1802 census is the village of Neuendorf. The census for the village of Neuendorf has been previously published on pages 254 to 256 in Benjamin H. Unruh’s book Die niederländisch-niederdeutschen Hintergründe der mennonitischen Ostwanderungen im 16., 18. und 19. Jahrhundert.

The data from this census is available for review as a table of the original census data and as a database in the form of a gedcom file in which the ages of the people mentioned in the census have been converted into approximate years of birth. In the both the table and the gedcom file I have spelled the names as they appear in the original document.
