Matilda beloved wife of Thomas Toews of Calgary, AB, passed away on July 3, 2014 at the age of 80 years.

Matilda Baerg Toews was born on October 20, 1933 to John and Margaret Baerg in Acme, AB. Matilda suffered from dementia in the later years and suddenly passed away July 3, 2014.
Matilda graduated from the local high school and went on to study teaching at the University of Alberta. While in grade nine she won the Governor General’s Award. After graduating from university she worked at various places including Gumbo School, Nordegg Flats (teaching on the reservation) and in numerous Calgary schools. She was a dedicated and respected teacher and librarian. Matilda married Thomas Toews whom she had met decades earlier. Thomas remembered Matilda’s marvelous qualities and he returned to Linden to win her love. They were married on July 31, 1992 and after Twenty-one years of marriage Tom passed away in November of 2013. Matilda is survived by her four step-children; Joan Toews, Russel (Sharon) Toews, Norine (Keith) Freedman, and Tom (Helen) Toews. Matilda is also survived by six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Matilda will be missed by her sister Elsie (Allan) Barkman; her three brothers Tom Baerg, Henry (Marie) Baerg, and John (Bernice) Baerg; fifty-five nieces and nephews from various places in Canada and the US. Loved ones gone before are her husband Thomas; parents; infant sister; sisters Sophia, Doris; brother Alphaeus; and sisters-in-law Eva and Dorothy; and grandson Bradley.
Matilda’s family would like to extend a special thank you for all the staff at the Bethany Care Center and to Matilda’s care companion Toni Finot for the wonderful care that they provided Matilda.
A Celebration of Matilda’s life will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. at the Church of God in Christ Mennonite Linden, Alberta.
