Administrative/Biographical History

Theodore D. Regehr (Ted) was born in November of  1937 in Coaldale, Alberta to Isaak I. Regehr and Maria Dick, immigrants from the Molotschna settlement in what is today known as the  Ukraine.  He is married to Sylvia Ratzlaff of Sunnyslope, Alberta and they have two children: Sonya and Paul. Ted entered  the history program at the University of Alberta and graduated in 1959,  beginning what would become a lifelong involvement in academia.  He received his MA at the Carleton University, Ottawa, in 1963 and his PhD. at the University of Alberta in  1967.  During this time he also worked at  the National Archives of Canada.  The  year after achieving his doctorate, Ted joined the faculty of the University of Saskatchewan,  eventually rising to department head.  Professor  Regehr writes and researches extensively and is recognized as an authority on  Western Canadian history – particularly in the subject areas of railroads,  Canadian business, and Mennonites.  He  retired in 1996, but continued his active historical work – his third volume of  the Mennonites in Canada Series,  encompassing the years 1939-1970 was published that same year.  Ted has served as president of the Mennonite  Historical Society of Canada, been an advisor to Mennonite Central Committee’s  Historical Committee and is presently an advisor and member of the Mennonite  Historical Society of Alberta.  His most  recent book was Faith, Life and Witness  in the Northwest, 1903-2003: Centennial History of the Northwest Mennonite  Conference, published in 2003 and A Generation of Vigilance.  The Lives and Work of Johannes and Tina Harder, published in 2009.
