Striker, George

March 10, 1930 – May 9th, 2012

George Striker of Tofield, AB passed away after a courageous fight with breast cancer on May 9, 2012 at the age of 82 years, with his devoted wife Martha by his side.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Martha; children Gina (Greg) Henkelman, Don (Heather) and Liam (Helen); thirteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; son-in-law Chuck Johnson; numerous nieces and nephews.
George was predeceased by his youngest daughter Verva Johnson in 1999; eldest son Dell in 2003; eleven siblings; and chosen grandson Rob Johnson.
George was born March 10, 1930 and lived on a farm near Biggar, Saskatchewan. At the age of 19 he moved to Edmonton where he attended University and got a degree in social work. Even as a young man he was involved in the ministry – first as youth pastor, then a lay minister. He worked for the Hope Misssion helping the less fortunate, then for the ATFA speaking on drug and alcohol addictions in many Alberta schools. In 1976 he started working for the city of Edmonton as a transit operator where he worked until his retirement in 1995.
George and Martha moved to an acreage in the Spilstead area southwest of Tofield in 1981. Even though many people thought commitment to drive 35 miles to and from work everyday was asking for trouble, these were the best years of his life. He had no regrets. He often said it was the only real home he had ever known. In the Spilstead area George wasn’t just Mr. Striker. He was Grandpa George/Santa Claus to many neighbour children.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Tofield Mennonite Church, 5631 – 47 St., Tofield. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation or the charity of one’s choice.
