Goertzen, Jake

Jake Goertzen It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jake Goertzen, beloved husband of Eleanor of Calgary, on Sunday, August 19, 2007 at the age of 81 years, following a brief battle with cancer. Jake was born on March 3, 1926 in Spat in the Krimea in Russia. The family arrived at the port of Quebec on the Empress of Australia. From there they moved to Alberta and settled on a farm in Countess. Jake went to Clemenceau School and then joined the army during World War II. After the war, Jake moved to Calgary and worked at various plumbing companies, eventually starting his own company. Jake and Eleanor enjoyed spending winters in the United States, curling and square dancing.Besides his loving wife and best friend, Eleanor, Jake is survived by his two sons and daughter-in-law, Jim and Jolanda, Matthew; his daughter Sarah; and his granddaughter Jessica. He will also be lovingly remembered by his four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Peter and Ann, John and Louise, Charlie and Edna, Ike; and his three sisters and brother-in-law, Helen, Maggie, and Nettie and Julius. Jake was predeceased by his parents Peter and Sarah; and his brother Gary.

Funeral Services will be held at First Mennonite Church (2600 Richmond Road S.W.) on Monday, August 27, 2007 at 2:00 p.m.
