Bartel, Gerhard Cornelius went peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Saviour on Monday, February 26, 2007 at the age of 77 years. and was cared for by his wife of five and one half years, Lil (nee Lane); his two sons and their families JD and Tammy Bartel, Somerlea, and Jessalayne, Elli-Rose (in heaven); Wilf and Carol Bartel, Christalea, Candice and Bethany; and his two daughters and their families, Barb and Phil Heidebrecht, Alex, Ethan and Mikaela; Sheryl and Gerald Grasmeyer, Lauren, Micah and Reuben. Also the children and grandchildren he welcomed through his marriage to Lil, Lisa and Grant Weir, Melissa and Christopher; Christopher and Evette Graham, Kristen, James and Rachel. Gerhard is also survived by his two sisters, Elsbeth (Rudy) Janssen, Irmgard (Manfred) Claassen, two brothers Paul (Hedy) Bartel, and Siegfried (Delores) Bartel; three sister-in-laws, Ilse Bartel, Magda Bartel and Heidi Bartel; and numerous extended family. Those who went before him were his parents Otto and Marie (nee Cornelsen) Bartel, his first wife Margaret (nee Penner), their infant son Garry, and his siblings, three sisters and six brothers.

Gerhard was born on December 28, 1929 in Grunau, West Prussia and immigrated to Canada with many of his family in 1952 after their displacement during WWII. Life experiences and his faith in God are what shaped him to be the man he was. He left a legacy to us all of how to give what we have been given, and through all things to give God the glory, honour and praise. We, as a family, would like to thank the nurses and doctors on Unit 81 at the Foothills Medical Centre for their care.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Thursday, March 1, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

A Celebration of Gerhard’s Life will be held at Foothills Alliance Church (333 Edgepark Blvd. N.W.) on Friday March 2, 2007 at 12:30 p.m.
