GEDCOM Files . . .There are two versions of the gedcom files of the census data. In one the names are spelled as they appear in the table and the other is a standardized version in which some surnames such as Klasen and some given names such as Konert have been converted to more generally accepted forms (Klassen and Conrad). 1801 Kronsgarten Census: original spelling Gedcom, standardized spelling Gedcom
Extracted by Tim Janzen
This site makes available a census taken on October 15, 1801 of the village of Kronsgarten in the Chortitza Colony in South Russia. The original document was written in Russian and may be found on frames 65 to 68 of File #98 of the microfilm of selected files from Odessa Archives, Fund 6, Inventory 1. This census is included in a group of censuses of other non-Mennonite colonies in the original file. Additional detailed statistical data about crop production for each head of household in Kronsgarten is also found in German on the microfilm on frames 212 to 217 of File #67 but has not been extracted up to this point.
The data from this census is available for review as a table of the original census data or as gedcom files which may be downloaded. In the gedcom, the ages of the people mentioned in the census have been converted into approximate years of birth. In the table of the census data I spelled the surnames as they appeared in the original document but translated them from Russian to English and translated the given names to generally standard English spellings of the names.
In this census all Bartel families are listed with the surname Bartel Mewzen as was the case in the 1811-1816 census of Kronsgarten previously published on pages 873 and 874 of Karl Stumpp’s book The Emigration from Germany to Russia in the years 1763 to 1862. In the modified gedcom file I changed the surname of these families to simply Bartel. I have added the village and household number in the “immigration location” field in the gedcom files. To search the gedcom files most effectively I suggest researchers import the gedcom files into the Brother’s Keeper program and conduct searches using the name codes as found in Grandma database.
