Gerhard Jacob Regehr was born on 23 February 1932 at Cereal, Alberta, the son of Jacob Gerhard Regehr and Anna (Driedger) Regehr. The family had migrated from the Soviet Union to Canada in 1926 and lived in New Brigden, Alberta, and Cereal, Alberta, before settling near Tofield, Alberta, in 1934.
