Administrative History
Efforts at developing inter-Mennonite unified services began in 1929 with the formation of the Vertreterversammlung (Meeting of the Representatives of Mennonite Churches and Groups of Alberta). The final meeting of this organization in 1965, under the name Alberta Mennonite Relief and Immigration Council, where 66 delegates from 27 churches attended, formally established the Mennonite Central Committee Alberta (MCCA), based in Calgary. It reports to the Mennonite Central Committee Canada based in Winnipeg, which in turn reports to the Mennonite Central Committee (international) based in Akron, Pennsylvania. Its mission is to “share God’s love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic human needs and working for justice and peace.” It has affiliate organizations including Calgary Centre for Newcomers, Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers, Mennonite Disaster Service Alberta, Restorative Justice Ministries, Ten Thousand Villages Alberta, and MCC Thrift Stores in Calgary, Lethbridge, and Taber. It operates a number of social programs and projects in Alberta and internationally, many of them volunteer-driven
