Administrative/Biographical History

Johann Jantzen was born 6 October 1823 in Neuteichsdorfsfeld, West Prussia, near Danzig.  In 1869 he migrated to Southern Russia in an area close to Afghanistan.  In 1884 the family left Russia and moved too Nebraska.  He died 5 October 1903.

Scope and Content

This is a personal diary started by Johann Jantzen in 1839 and continued by other family members from 1903 to 1935.  It was written in the German Gothic script, transcribed into Latin script and then translated into English.  Included are maps, two letters dated 1913 and 1998 describing family circumstances, biographical notes on Johann’s father and grandfather, and a brief genealogical chart.    The story begins in West Prussia, follows the family’s travels to Southern Russia east of the Aral Sea, then back to Germany and emigration to America, where they settled near Plymouth, Jefferson County in Nebraska.
