Administrative/Biographical History

David C. Peters was born in Mexico and as a young man his parents moved to Canada, first to northern British Columbia and then to La Crete, Alberta.  His father was a teacher in the Old Colony Schools in Mexico.  Drought conditions forced them to seek other ways of making a living.  David was one of the first young people to enter the field of education even though it was opposed by the church leaders.  He attended both the Old Colony Schools and the Public Schools and then spent his life time teaching in the elementary grades.

Scope and Content

The fonds consists of a single 5-page essay on “Education in the Mennonite Community of La Crete.”  In it Peters discusses various issues such as economic reasons why the children attended school irregularly and moves through the years and  how attitudes toward education have changed.
