Biographical History

Carl Edward Hansen, missionary, Bible School teacher and pastor, was born on 26 October 1941 in Rosemary, Alberta, the son of Jens Peter Hansen and Elizabeth Winnifred Friesen. He grew up on farms in Alberta and Ontario, graduated from Eastern Mennonite College, attended Eastern Mennonite Seminary and holds graduate degrees from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary (M.Div. 1971) and Fuller Theological Seminary (Th.M, 1985). He married Vera Dorothy King in 1964. Together they served as missionaries in several East African countries for more than 20 years. Carl worked in pastoral ministry with the Salem Mennonite Church from 1875 to 1984. The Hansens returned to Africa in 1985.  Carl is the author of the biographies of his grandparents, Jacob and Justina Friesen, published under the title Jacob and Justina: Pilgrims.  The Odyssey of a Family (Morgantown, PA: Masthof Press, 1998).

Scope and Content

The Carl Edward Hansen fonds consists of subject files containing sermons, sermon notes, printed material and clippings. Most are arranged in accordance with the Rossin-Dewey Decimal Classification.  Guides to the classification system are included.  The files were created and used during the years of the Hansens’ pastoral and teaching ministries.

Source of the Acquisition

After the Hansens left for Africa in 1985 the files came into the custody of Mary Burkholder, historian and archivist of the Northwest Mennonite Conference. She donated them to the Mennonite Historical Society of Alberta in 2014.
