Wiebe, Elsie

June 28, 1923 – May 13, 2010

Elsie Wiebe, beloved wife of John of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at the age of 86 years.

Elsie was born June 28, 1923 to Jacob and Annie Andres in Langham, Saskatchewan. The family moved to a farm east of Hepburn, SK where she spent her childhood and elementary school years. She attended the local country school (Lakeberg).

In the early 1940’s the family moved to Ontario to the area near St. Catharines. In 1947, she married John Wiebe and they had six children. John’s schooling and career led them to live in Guelph, ON, Ithaca, NY, Vineland, ON, and much later to Brooks, AB, Edmonton, AB and Calgary, AB.

Elsie loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandma and was a wonderful hostess and friend to a very large number of people. She was mother to Harvey d. 2001 (Lorraine), Stanley d. 1972, Martha d. 2006, Paul (Nancy), Tom (Carolyn), and Marianne (Michael); and grandmother to thirteen; and had one great grandchild. Throughout her life Elsie was a much loved mother and grandmother to her family and host and friend to a very large number of people. She will be missed by many and will always be remembered as a very loving wife, wonderful mom and caring grandma.

As a young girl she made a commitment to be a follower of Jesus Christ. This led her to a whole life of service to others. She channelled much of her service through the church, the Gideons, the Mennonite Central Committee, as well as by being in significant roles in support of Eden Christian College and Tabor Manor.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Sunday, May 16, 2010 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at Highland Mennonite Brethren Church (4018 Centre B Street N.W.) on Monday, May 17, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
