SAWATZKY, Katherine Margaret (nee Dick)

July 21, 1922 – Slavgorod, Russia
May 22, 2017 – Calgary, AlbertaKatherine passed away peacefully on May 22, 2017 at the age of 94 years to reconnect with her missed husband John in eternity. She will be missed by her daughters, Doreen (Gerry) and Phyllis (Bob); her sons, Rob (Roberta) and Thomas (Goranka); and grandchildren, Becky, Elizabeth, Johnathon, Christopher, Stephen, Nathan, Shannon and Daniel; as well as her great-grandchildren. Katherine was predeceased by her son Jack; her mother Margaret; her father Peter; and her brother Peter.

Katherine, at the age of seven, moved with her family from Siberia to Rosemary, Alberta. She attended four terms of Bible school to help her teach Sunday school, a great love for her, and increase her understanding of God. She married her life mate, John on October 26, 1944 in Rosemary, Alberta. Raising their five children together in first Trochu, then Bassano and finally Calgary, saw Katherine make friends in both the community and church. She and John always had a large garden from which they worked long hours to help feed their developing family.

Katherine often expressed herself in creative ways: drawing as a young woman, creating floral arrangements and clothes with embroidery for herself and her children, having an artistic eye for fashioning in fabric. She also enjoyed baking new and traditional family dishes with her children.
